73The Fantastic 1750 GTV
One of the most popular Alfa Romeos of all time is the 1750 GTV. Great looks, a great engine, and great suspension combine to produce one of the all-time driving classics. Designed by Bertone, Pininfarina had died a year earlier, the car was released in 1967 and although the later 2-litre versions may be slightly quicker it is the 1750 engine which sets this model apart as being the sweetest to drive.
I love the looks of the 1750 GTV, the lines are just perfect for a small, late-sixties coupe. The Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV has what the Italians have always done well: style.
Cruiser and Sports Car
Not only was the 1750 GTV great on twisty roads the gutsy twin-cam could cruise at the ton all day, helped by a 5-speed gearbox, and something which helped to make the car popular in America with all those wide open spaces to travel across. It was a combination of characteristics which allowed it to be used as a business express during the week and a sports car on a weekend which helped to make it so popular.
It was replaced eventually by the far less popular Alfetta coupes. Hideous cars by comparison, front-wheel drive as well. I don't know what Alfa were thinking. Even the large executive saloon, the Alfa Romeo 164 was better.
